Rostock
Rostock

We took the local train to Rostock after breakfast in the main dining room - kippers for Richard and spa omelet for me. Getting to Rostock was a bit of an adventure. We misread the station sign and got off. It didn’t say we were at Rostock - it said that this is the platform for the Rostock train! A minor error but hey, that goes with the territory and it only caused a 20 minute delay until the next train!
Rostock was a Hanseatic port and was totally destroyed by 20th century war. Part of East Germany, it is now rebuilt in the old style. A highlight was a church with an amazing astronomical clock which still works and a fabulous organ loft that looked like a theatre set.
We got a tasty Thuringer cooked sausage in a bun for a quickie lunch on the square in the old town. Later, back at the ship we supplemented that with cafe latte (actually I had two!) and mini smoked salmon sandwiches in Baristas.
Then we went back out to explore Warnemunde itself which is both a fishing village and a resort town for beach holidays for Germans. We explored pretty back alleys and looked at the many boats selling cooked fish and the boisterous holiday makers in the outdoor cafes. The sandy beach is huge - at 3 kilometres, it is the longest Baltic beach in Germany.
