Tallinn
Tallinn

Another UNESCO world heritage site. Beautiful medieval core, walled ( but not as intact as Visby) with an unusual layout. There were two cities - a lower town with ethnic locals and an elite (Russia, I believe) upper town. There was a gate between them and the leading officials would meet at a specific gate when there was a discussion needed. Seems appropriate for the birthplace of Skype!
Again there were gabled houses, ancient churches etc. We arrived on the last day of their annual medieval fair so there were medieval costumes, music and dancing on a stage in the main square.
We followed Rick Steves' walking tour from our guidebook which included the early 20th century Russian orthodox basilica. Also we visited a disused church which now houses religious art from other church properties. There were some amazing altarpieces and statues, mostly from the 13-15th century.
This area seems to venerate St Christopher. There was a statue near the ship. All Europe seems to venerate St George - not sure why!
We did a little shopping at the “sweater wall” on our way back to the shuttle bus. We were docked in a central location but it was still good to avoid the walk through the industrial port lands.
Tea time when we got back to the ship - 4-5pm. They do a lovely tea with china pots, fancy sandwiches brought round on trays and a sweets trolley wheeled around. String orchestra to entertain us!
