Visby
Visby

A lovely walled city on Gotland, a UNESCO world heritage site for its 3.4 km walls and medieval layout. We walked the walls to marvel at the towers. In one spot there is a rock stuck in an arrow slot. It had been catapulted at the wall centuries ago! We were glad that we got the tourist bureau staffer to point out which sections of the wall are better appreciated from outside the walls and which should be walked on the inside.
It certainly is a pretty town and was used for Pippi Longstocking movies. There is a political event going on here - Almagen week, an important meeting place for everyone involved in Swedish politics. During the week, representatives from the major political parties in Sweden take turns giving speeches in the Almedalen park. In spite of this hoopla near the dock but it is still less hectic than Gdansk.
Later, we joined a brewery tour (Gotlands Bryggeri) and tasted their beer in a little cellar bar. Later, we had BBQ salmon at a garden cafe before strolling to look at the church ruins and pretty flowery side streets. The ruined churches hail from the time when Visby was flourishing and every foreign merchant group had to have their own church.
