Montevideo
Montevideo
Highlights: Lovely architecture similar to Buenos Aires but needing some TLC. The Sunday market with locals sipping their mate (tea).
A lovely city with many old buildings and some fine squares. Some are in the
process of renovation and others are waiting for it. Of course you can't tell what the
insides look like - could be palatial.
The Sunday market on Tristán Narvaja Street.was vast and sold everything from eggs and cheese to bras, welding helmets and toys. We saw people wandering along drinking their mate tea - a rounded apple-shaped cup with a straw. They also carried a thermos with more hot water!
Later in the day, we went out again but there were fewer people around - it felt riskier. You know how you feel. But it doesn't spoil Montevideo for us. We popped into the Mercado del Porto, which has turned into a food court, with braziers roasting meats. A lovely port of call.
