Santos

Highlights:  the friendly people, the long beach, the old coffee exchange.

Our impression of Santos is that it is a typically down-at-the-heels port city but with friendly helpful people - faded glory from the era of the coffee magnates. Much bigger than I thought too, with a huge sandy beach. Santos *is* shabby but there are some beautiful buildings now used for government services. And the coffee museum, housed in the old coffee exchange has lovely rosewood seating used by the merchants. It was in operation in that building until 1957.

We did manage to get around in Santos with a little help. The tourist info lady near the beach walked us to the right tram stop on her way to lunch and later, going back to the port shuttle stop, a young woman made sure we got the right tram. Her tram even waited for her while she walked us to the stop!
